At Barcelona Valley Golf Club’s Lake Course, two par 6s stretch the round beyond the familiar drive-and-approach routine. Formerly St. Andrews 2000, this Desmond Muirhead design in Rayong is hilly inland golf, with tree-lined corridors, elevated tees and fairways arranged on different levels. Those long holes are only part of its character. Shorter uphill holes shift the emphasis back to approach control, so the challenge changes rather than merely accumulating distance. Expect to spend as much thought on where a shot finishes as on which club sends it farthest.

The divided fairway on the par-5 seventh shows why finding grass is not the whole job: the level you choose affects what follows. Water elsewhere complicates that calculation, because a cautious lay-up is not helpful if it leaves a carry beyond your reliable range. Work backwards from a manageable approach rather than automatically taking the longest available club. Where bunkers guard raised greens, allow enough carry to clear the sand and reach the putting surface. A position that offers a controlled approach can be worth more than a few extra yards.

From central Pattaya, allow roughly 45–60 minutes on the road, adjusted for your hotel and traffic, with another 30–45 minutes before tee-off. Plan a cart-based round and confirm current cart arrangements and caddie charges when booking. Reserve rental clubs and check practice access in advance, particularly for an early start. Your transfer instructions should specify “Lake Course, formerly St. Andrews 2000,” since Barcelona Valley contains three separate layouts and the estate name alone leaves room for confusion.

Lake makes most sense for golfers with dependable contact who enjoy planning unusual holes, particularly mid-handicappers willing to accept an extra lay-up. Lower-handicap players can consider more ambitious routes, while shorter hitters should choose tees by realistic carries rather than total yardage. It is a less convincing choice for a beginner’s first holiday round or anyone seeking an easy warm-up after a flight. Within a Pattaya itinerary, prioritise Lake when split-level fairways and extended shot sequences are part of the attraction, not simply because two par 6s make an unusual scorecard.
